Getting to know Ricardo Gathers — Duke Basketball’s Newest Recruit

RICARDO GATHERSDuke, among many other schools, has been recruiting Shabazz Muhammad for some time so you are more than likely familiar with his exploits. Just this week, news began to surface that Duke had begun paying attention to 2012 power forward Ricardo Gathers.

BallIsLife.com is down at the City of Palms tournament, one of the nation’s largest high school basketball events. In their Day One recap, they captured some highlights of Gathers and Shabazz, as well as other talented young players. Check them out below and familiarize yourself with Gathers after the jump.

Riverside got 26 points and 11 rebounds from top-30 senior Ricardo Gathers

For the 2nd day in a row Gathers performed well, this time against one of the nation’s top big men in Tony Parker. Gathers defended Parker with little or no help and made it very difficult for his opponent to score inside. While Parker gave him some struggles on the other end as well, there was no doubt that Gathers won this individual matchup of elite big men.

Gathers, who is 6 feet 7, 260 pounds, noted Baylor, North Carolina State, Duke, LSU and St. John’s as the five schools recruiting him the hardest.

No visits have been set up yet, but Gathers does know what he will be looking for when the time comes.

“I want to be with a winner,” he said. “I want to be with players who compete and play as a team.”

Sounds like he described Duke in so far as what he’s looking for in a team.

The winner part? No team has done it better over the last 30 years.
